Shawani: The Ministry of Justice has prepared mechanisms to deal with the legal status of female inmates of foreign nationalities and their accompanying children

Minister of Justice Khaled Shawani affirmed that the Ministry has prepared mechanisms to address the legal situation of female inmates of foreign nationalities and their accompanying children.

A statement by the Ministry stated that the Parliamentary Women, Family and Childhood Committee hosted today, Sunday, Minister of Justice Khaled Shawani and directors of women’s prison Directorates in Baghdad and the governorates, to discuss the draft law for the employment of inmates and mechanisms to address the legal status of inmates of foreign nationalities and their accompanying children.

Shawani reviewed in detail the work of the correctional and inmate departments and the most important problems and obstacles that impede their work, explaining that the Ministry of Justice is working diligently on the issue of the children of Iraqi and foreign inmates in the correctional departments.

He stressed that the Ministry is working according to what was stated in the government curriculum, which includes addressing the file of overcrowding in prisons, by expanding within prison institutions, such as adding new buildings to accommodate inmates, as well as instructing to expedite the completion of lagging projects in building correctional departments, pointing out that “the third axis in the ministerial curriculum to address overcrowding includes building large reform cities in accordance with international human rights standards.
