Doha: The three-day Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2) commenced in Doha on Tuesday, featuring participation from several global leaders, including the representative of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. The Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani inaugurated the summit at the Qatar National Convention Center, marking the event's significance three decades after the inaugural summit held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
According to Kuwait News Agency, world leaders attending the summit are expected to renew their collective commitment to human-centered development amid intricate global challenges. The focus of the summit is on comprehensive and sustainable social development, with approximately 8,000 participants attending. The event will feature general sessions, meetings, and high-level roundtable discussions addressing key issues such as social protection, equality, employment, and inclusion.
The summit not only reaffirms the commitment to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also serves as a platform for governments, international organizations, civil institutions, and other stakeholders to exchange views on sustainability and international cooperation. The UN anticipates that the Doha Summit will accelerate efforts to eradicate poverty, promote full employment, decent work, and social inclusion, aligning with the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration.
The event is expected to culminate in the issuance of the "Doha Declaration," a key document that will set priorities for political, social, and economic development over the next decade. The declaration will emphasize efforts to eradicate poverty, hunger, and malnutrition, while also highlighting the importance of employing digital and AI technologies to protect human rights and close social gaps. Notably, "No poverty" is the first goal within the 17 goals under the UN 2030 SDG framework.
