Scottish National Party elects Hamza Yousaf as leader, first minister

Scottish National Party elected on Monday Hamza Yousaf as its leaders and Scotland’s first minister, succeeding Nicola Sturgeon.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Hamza Yousaf is the first Muslim to lead a major UK party, by winning 52 percent of the votes against Kate Forbes.

Hamza Yousaf becomes only SNP’s fifth leader since 1979, and will face the task of uniting a party that has dominated Scottish politics in recent years, the party looks deeply divided in the wake of Sturgeon’s resignation last February. (end) nbs.nsa.bb
