Moscow: Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated Thursday that Moscow's objectives in Ukraine remain "unchanged," emphasizing its openness to dialogue with the United States despite the imposition of new sanctions. The ministry described these sanctions as ineffective for promoting peace.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Ministry's Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova conveyed through a press statement that Russia is prepared to maintain discussions with the US State Department, based on prior understandings between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. She criticized the newly announced American sanctions as a continuation of the US policy under the Biden administration, warning that these measures would yield "counterproductive results" and worsen the situation instead of stabilizing it. Zakharova further noted the ineffectiveness of the 19th EU sanctions package, claiming it damages the European economy and cautioned that Moscow "reserves the right to respond in line with its legitimate national interests."
The foreign ministry underscored in its statement that addressing the fundamental causes of the conflict in Ukraine is crucial before any cease-fire discussions can take place. It stressed that Western sanctions will not deter Russia from pursuing its legitimate goals of safeguarding its national security.
Zakharova also mentioned that the Kremlin would soon respond to comments by President Trump regarding the cancellation of the Russia-US meeting. The ministry reiterated its commitment to defending Russia's interests and taking necessary actions to ensure its security and stability, while emphasizing that dialogue remains the sole path to resolving the crisis and securing European and international peace.
