Ottawa: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced late Monday a 25 percent tariff on US goods in reaction to the "unjustified" American tariffs against Canada. "Canada will not let this unjustified decision go unanswered. Should American tariffs come into effect tonight, Canada will, effective 12:01 a.m. EST tomorrow, respond with 25 percent tariffs against $155 billion of American goods," Trudeau declared.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Trudeau emphasized that Canada's tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn. He highlighted Canada's ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to consider several non-tariff measures should U.S. tariffs persist. Trudeau urged the U.S. administration to reconsider their tariffs, affirming Canada's commitment to protecting its economy, jobs, and fair trade.
The imposition of U.S. tariffs, which affects both Canada and Mexico, is set to take effect on Tuesday. This move follows President Donald Trump's executive order from last February, imposing a 25 percent tariff on Mexican and Canadian goods, alongside a 10 percent tariff on the Canadian energy sector. The tariffs had initially been postponed for a month, allowing time for Mexico and Canada to address concerns related to illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the US.
