Palestinian President Welcomes Agreement to End Gaza Conflict

Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday welcomed US President Donald Trump's announcement of an agreement to end the war on Gaza, ensure withdrawal, allow humanitarian aid, and exchange prisoners.

According to Kuwait News Agency, President Abbas expressed hope that the agreement would pave the way for a permanent political solution to end the Israeli occupation and establish a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. He commended President Trump's efforts along with those of all mediators involved in achieving the agreement, affirming Palestine's readiness to collaborate with concerned parties to attain peace and stability grounded in international legitimacy.

President Abbas highlighted the necessity for immediate implementation of the agreement, including the release of all hostages and prisoners, the urgent entry of humanitarian aid through UN agencies, the prevention of displacement or annexation, and the initiation of comprehensive reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip.

He reiterated that sovereignty over Gaza belongs to the State of Palestine, emphasizing unity with the West Bank under Palestinian law, national institutions, a unified security force, and with coordinated Arab and international support.

Earlier today, parties announced an agreement on the first phase of the US President's plan, presented at the UN General Assembly. This phase includes detainee release, withdrawal to agreed borders, and the entry of 400 aid trucks daily.

On October 7, 2023, Israeli occupation forces launched a war on Gaza through bombardment, siege, and starvation, resulting in the martyrdom of over 67,000 Palestinians and injury of approximately 170,000 others, according to official sources.
