Ramallah: Palestine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned Israeli far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's storming of prominent Palestinian prisoner and Fatah Central Committee member Marwan Barghouti's cell.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Ben-Gvir's entry into Barghouti's solitary confinement wing at the "Ganot" prison is viewed as an organized act of terror that highlights the struggles faced by Palestinians amidst ongoing genocide and displacement. The ministry's statement emphasized the responsibility of the Israeli government for the safety of Barghouti and all Palestinian prisoners.
Palestinian Vice President Husein Al-Sheikh criticized Ben-Gvir's actions, describing them as an extreme form of psychological, moral, and physical terror against Palestinian detainees. He asserted that such acts are in violation of international humanitarian norms and charters.
Furthermore, the Fatah Movement labeled the threats as part of a systematic suppression effort by the occupation against detainees. Abdullah Al-Zaghari, President of the Prisoners' Club, highlighted a video posted on Thursday evening, suggesting it indicates the occupation's intentions to target leaders in prisons.
Barghouti, who has been in solitary confinement since the war, has been detained by Israeli forces since 2002, accused of involvement in crimes during the second uprising. The situation raises concerns for his safety and the wellbeing of other Palestinian prisoners who have endured repeated violent attacks.
