OIC Urges Member States to Tackle Digital Violence Against Women

Jeddah: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Monday restated its commitment to backing member states' fight against "digital violence" and promoting women's empowerment, as well as protecting women and girls from all walks of life. In a press release marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the OIC emphasized the urgent need for action.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the OIC cautioned against the alarmingly increasing violence perpetrated through the internet, including artificial intelligence (AI)-based identity theft and the non-consensual sharing of content. These digital threats are increasingly targeting women and girls, particularly those in journalism, activism, and public roles.

The OIC highlighted that digital violence continues to undermine women's safety, mental health, economic participation, and freedom of expression. In response, the Jeddah-based organization urged all member states to enhance legal protections, hold digital platforms accountable, update legislation related to digital crimes, and foster a digital culture aligned with the OIC's mission to improve the status of women and relevant ministerial decisions.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed annually on November 25, following a United Nations (UN) Resolution. This resolution calls on governments and non-governmental organizations worldwide to organize events raising awareness about violence against women globally.
