Kuwait City: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation expressed regret over the US Administration's decision to lift the immunity of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) emphasized the importance of all UN members upholding their obligations under the UN Charter and respecting resolutions, including those related to UN agencies, in a press release issued on Saturday.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the OIC highlighted the critical humanitarian role of the UNRWA, noting its significance as a lifeline for millions of Palestinian refugees, especially in the Gaza Strip. The agency is seen as indispensable for those suffering due to ongoing conflicts in the region. The OIC urged the United States to reconsider its decision, which now allows the UN aid agency to be subject to lawsuits in US courts.
The OIC also called on the US to reinstate funding for the UNRWA and to pressure Israeli occupation authorities to fulfill their obligations under UN resolutions. The UNRWA has long represented the collective duty of the international community to provide essential humanitarian services and protect the legal rights of Palestinian refugees until they can return to their original homes, as specified by relevant UN resolutions.
The OIC's statement referenced UN General Assembly Resolution 194 (III), which advocates for the return of refugees wishing to live peacefully with their neighbors at the earliest practicable date. The organization renewed its call for the international community to end the genocide being committed against Palestinians, which includes acts of starvation, deprivation of humanitarian assistance, and total blockade by Israeli occupation authorities.
