The Organization of Islamic Cooperation called on the Swedish authorities to take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of incidents of insulting the Holy Qur’an and Islamic symbols under the pretext of freedom of expression.
Secretary-General of the Organization, Hussein Ibrahim Taha, expressed, during a telephone conversation with the Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström, the member states’ dissatisfaction with the repeated incidents of insulting the Holy Qur’an, and touched on the content of the final statement issued by the Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in its extraordinary meeting that was held regarding the incident of burning copies of the Holy Qur’an in Sweden.
For his part, the Swedish Foreign Minister stated that his country’s government refuses to offend Islamic sanctities, including the Noble Qur’an, and that it is keen to maintain good relations with the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
During the past weeks, Sweden witnessed practices of desecration of copies of the Holy Qur’an by some extremists, which angered and denounced the Islamic world. It contradicts the values of tolerance and coexistence, and would fuel hatred and racism against Muslims.”
