Kathmandu: Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post as deadly protests, led by youth opposing the ban on social media platforms, spread to more areas, resulting in at least 19 fatalities and over 500 injuries.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Oli submitted his resignation to President Ramchandra Paudel. His resignation letter stated, "Considering the extraordinary situation prevailing in the country and in order to facilitate further efforts toward a constitutional political solution and problem resolution, I hereby resign from the office of Prime Minister, effective immediately, under Article 77(1)a of the Constitution."
The resignation occurred as protests against the government's decision to ban several social media platforms escalated, even with a curfew imposed to limit public movement. Despite these measures, the unrest intensified.
President Paudel and the Nepalese Army have urged citizens to remain calm and pursue solutions through dialogue and peaceful means. Reports indicate that protesters have set fire to and vandalized key government sites, including Singha Durbar, the Federal Parliament, the Supreme Court, the Special Court, district courts, and other political and governmental offices.
In response to the unrest, Yeti Airlines canceled all scheduled flights for the day, citing nationwide curfews and security concerns in the Kathmandu Valley. Additionally, Tribhuvan International Airport, the country's sole international gateway, has completely suspended its services.
