NATO concludes largest air force drill

Air Defender 2023, NATO’s largest air force drill ever, came to an end in Germany on Friday. The German-led drill gathered more than 10,000 personnel and 250 aircraft from 25 NATO member countries over the past 12 days, said Lt.-Gen. Ingo Gerhartz, Inspector of the German Air Force.

The highly successful drill highlighted the need for Germany to realize the central role it plays in the alliance due to geopolitical considerations, he said.

Noting that the drill displayed Germany’s commitment and capabilities, he said it targeted only a virtual enemy.

Lt.-Gen. Gerhartz added that 1,800 sorties, or 90 percent of the targeted 2,000 sorties, have been conducted during the drill.
