Kuwait city: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the Arctic region's significance to the Alliance's collective security, underscoring the need for continued coordination among Allies on this strategic issue.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Rutte's remarks came after his meeting with Danish Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt. The discussions focused on the Arctic's growing importance to collective security and Denmark's steps to strengthen investments in key defense capabilities.
In a statement posted on X, Rutte highlighted the importance of the Arctic, including Greenland, to collective security, noting Denmark's increased investments in key capabilities. He affirmed that Allies would continue to work together on these issues. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas echoed this sentiment, stating that Denmark and Greenland are not alone.
Kallas emphasized that Arctic security represents a shared transatlantic interest that can be discussed and addressed with allies in the United States. In a similar post on X, following her meeting with Troels Lund Poulsen and Vivian Motzfeldt, Kallas remarked that threats of imposing tariffs are not the right way to address these issues, asserting that sovereignty is not for trade or bargaining. She added that Europe has a full set of tools to protect its interests.
