Munich: The Munich Security Conference concluded its 62nd session after three days of intensive discussions focusing on transatlantic relations, the war in Ukraine, and the future of the international order. His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah participated in the conference alongside world leaders, senior officials, and representatives of international organizations.
According to Kuwait News Agency, opening discussions were dominated by concerns over strains between Europe and the United States. Conference Chairman Wolfgang Ischinger warned of what he described as erosion in the global system, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed the need to restore trust across the Atlantic, affirming that US strength is tied to cooperation with Europe.
French President Emmanuel Macron called for clearer mutual commitments between Europe and Washington, as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte underlined Europe's growing leadership role within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. On the second day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed that US-European ties remain "inseparable," while expressing doubts about Russia's willingness to end the Ukraine war and criticizing the United Nations' performance in conflict resolution.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi responded by defending the UN as an essential platform for international cooperation and reiterated Beijing's firm stance on Taiwan. The Ukraine war featured prominently in leaders' remarks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed readiness for a just and lasting peace, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen backed strengthening Europe's collective defense commitments.
In the closing session, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for meaningful Russian concessions to secure a sustainable ceasefire and stressed the importance of European involvement in ongoing diplomatic efforts. On the sidelines, His Highness the Prime Minister headed a high-level Kuwaiti delegation and held several bilateral meetings with regional and international officials.
Concluding the event, Ischinger thanked over 1,000 participants, noting a strong European determination to uphold unity and shared values amid evolving global challenges.
