Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port: Kuwaiti-Sino Resolve to Fast-Track Project

Kuwait City: Kuwait and China are committed to advancing the strategic Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project on Boubyan Island, recognizing its significance as a regional trade hub and its role in comprehensive development. This determination was evident after the project contract was signed in March, with both sides expressing a strong commitment to accelerate bilateral cooperation and project implementation. According to Kuwait News Agency, the fifth round of Kuwaiti-Sino political consultations concluded with expanded dialogue channels to broaden existing consensus for future progress. These discussions focused on agreements and memorandums of understanding between the two governments, particularly concerning mega development projects like Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port. Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Zhang Jianwei emphasized China's collaboration with Kuwait to advance the port project, considering it a substantial venture for Kuwaiti-Sino cooperation. His remarks followed an inspection tour by Chinese Vice Minister of Transport Fu Xueyin at the port project site, marking an important step towards completing the joint venture. Kuwaiti Minister of Public Works Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan met with the Chinese delegation to discuss the project's advancement. The Kuwaiti government has consistently prioritized the port project, aligning with the country's vision to diversify income sources, boost GDP, and reclaim its regional trade and financial role. Kuwait's commitment was reflected in signing a contract with China State Construction and Transport Limited for the port's study, design, and pre-implementation services, set for completion in February 2025. This agreement followed a decree-law approving a memorandum of understanding on port development, part of the "Belt and Road" initiative. The strategic partnership between Kuwait and China, established in 2018, underscores their shared goal to enhance economic and trade cooperation, particularly in mega projects, supporting Kuwait's 2025 development vision.
