Kuwait city: Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah stated that the security services will continue their efforts to combat "the pandemic of illicit drugs." "The Ministry of Interior derives its strength from the sovereign instructions of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah," the minister said in statements to Al-Akhbar news TV station.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Sheikh Fahad highlighted that support from His Highness the Amir has enabled the Ministry to achieve significant successes in their fight against illicit drugs, with nearly 90 percent of the illegal substances entering the country being seized and destroyed. The minister also mentioned that a draft bill on narcotics and psychotropic substances was approved during the weekly cabinet meeting. This bill aims to regulate the use and trade of drugs and strike a significant blow to drug dealers and addicts.
The draft law is set to be presented to His Highness the Amir for final endorsement. Sheikh Fahad has tasked the General Directorate of Security Relations and Media of the Ministry of Interior with collaborating with the Ministry of Information to launch a public awareness program. This initiative will include airing promotional segments before news bulletins as the new law is enforced.
He further noted that illicit drug producers and dealers continue to target Gulf Cooperation Council member countries, which collectively stand against this menace. Sheikh Fahad's comments were made during an inspection tour of the awareness campaign "We protect you against narcotics," co-organized by the ministries of interior and health and Kuwait University at the Avenues Mall.
