Kuwait city: Today marks several significant events in Kuwait's history, highlighting the country's cultural, economic, and technological advancements over the years. Among these milestones is the establishment of the first cultural club, the National Culture Club, underscoring Kuwait's commitment to cultural development.
According to Kuwait News Agency, 1961 was a pivotal year with the establishment of the Kuwait Investment Company, which was launched with a capital of KD 15 million to engage in both local and international investments. A year later, in 1962, Algerian revolution icon Djamila Bouhired visited Kuwait, receiving a warm welcome in recognition of her struggle against French colonization and as a symbol of Kuwait's support for the Algerian revolution.
In 1985, tensions in the region were highlighted when Iran seized the Kuwaiti cargo vessel Ibn Al-Baitar, marking a period of hostile actions against Kuwaiti ships. Fast forward to 2008, Kuwait Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a law mandating pre-marriage tests to ensure future couples were free of infectious and genetic diseases.
The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development has played a crucial role in international development, as demonstrated in 2010 when it signed a KD 12 million loan agreement with Pakistan for a hydro-electricity project. In the same year, Kuwaiti athlete Hamad Al-Nuwaiem won a gold medal in the weightlifting (75kg category) at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, contributing to Kuwait's impressive medal tally of four gold, six silver, and one bronze.
KFAED continued its development efforts in 2013 by financing 12 projects in Guinea with an estimated value of USD 177 million. In 2014, Kuwait demonstrated its commitment to cultural and religious outreach by donating USD one million to establish an Islamic Center in Utah, USA, and USD 117,000 for an Islamic and Cultural Center in Poland.
The year 2018 marked a leap in technological innovation with the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research launching the first hydrogen-fuel-powered vehicle. Additionally, the Kuwait Oil Tankers Company announced a project to build three giant Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tankers valued at KD 64.895 million, reflecting Kuwait's investment in energy infrastructure.
Lastly, in 2020, a team of Kuwaiti surgeons performed the country's first liver transplant surgery on a female citizen at the Al-Dabboos Center at Adan Hospital, showcasing advancements in medical capabilities.
