Malaysia Stresses Importance of Preserving Geo-Economic Cooperation at ASEAN Summit

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the significance of maintaining the geo-economic cooperation model between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China during his address at the 46th ASEAN Summit. He highlighted this model's critical role in fostering a more inclusive and sustainable future for the region.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Ibrahim, in his opening remarks, underscored that this trilateral cooperation serves as a strategic pillar in a multipolar global environment. He described the summit as a reflection of goodwill, enabling regional blocs to collaborate with a clear strategic vision. This cooperation, he noted, symbolizes regional unity's strength, which positively impacts the global stage.

Addressing economic concerns, Ibrahim expressed apprehension over the rising threat of protectionism and the fragmentation of the multilateral system, particularly noting the recent imposition of unilateral tariffs by the United States. He outlined ASEAN's prompt response to these challenges through the establishment of a Geo-Economic Task Force, aimed at coordinating efforts and demonstrating resolve and confidence.

Ibrahim also acknowledged progress made regarding the Myanmar crisis through the formation of an informal advisory group led by former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, with support from regional leaders such as Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

He emphasized that "Peace, stability, and prosperity have often depended on an open, inclusive, and rules-based international order, anchored in the free flow of trade, capital, and people," cautioning that these foundations are being undermined by arbitrary measures. Despite these challenges, he expressed confidence in ASEAN's resilience and ability to shape its future.

The 46th ASEAN Summit, along with the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the 1st ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, commenced on Monday and is being held from May 26 to 27 in Kuala Lumpur. His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah of Kuwait attended the summit, representing His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

ASEAN, established in 1967, aims to promote economic, political, and social integration while ensuring peace and stability in the region. It comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
