Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan stated that Malaysia will not acknowledge the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on Malaysian companies with ties to Russia, as these sanctions were not sanctioned by the United Nations.
According to Kuwait News Agency, in a parliamentary address on Wednesday, Hasan clarified that the issue of sanctions is unrelated to Malaysia’s inclination to join the BRICs economic group. Instead, it concerns the customs law, highlighting that six Malaysian companies have been added to the US sanctions list.
Hasan emphasized that Malaysia’s recent participation in BRICs meetings as a partner does not affect its involvement in organizations such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). He also mentioned Malaysia’s attendance at Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum meetings and G20 meetings.
During these international events, Malaysia consistently addresses the significant disparity between developed
nations and the Global South, Hasan noted. He stressed that Malaysia’s international economic presence is not diminishing but rather growing, as evidenced by efforts to explore new markets.
