Beirut: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has issued a stark warning regarding the potential termination of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate, emphasizing the need for its renewal amidst ongoing regional tensions. He cautioned that ending the mission prematurely could have serious implications before the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.
According to Kuwait News Agency, President Aoun highlighted these concerns during a meeting with U.S. Senator Darin Lahood and Representative Stephen Cohen at Baabda Palace. He stressed the critical importance of renewing the UNIFIL mandate, which plays a pivotal role in maintaining stability in the region. The President underscored that the mission should continue until several key conditions are met, including the withdrawal of Israeli troops, the return of Lebanese prisoners of war, the full deployment of the Lebanese Army along the borders, and the comprehensive implementation of UN Resolution 1701.
President Aoun also mentioned that Lebanon is still awaiting Israel's formal response to a proposal delivered by Ambassador Thomas Barrack. The Ambassador, along with Ms. Morgan Ortagus, is expected to visit Lebanon to discuss the matter further. Additionally, the President addressed unverified reports about Israel's plans to establish a buffer zone in southern Lebanon, indicating that Lebanon has not received any official communication regarding such plans.
During the meeting, President Aoun briefed the visiting U.S. congressmen on the Lebanese Army's vital responsibilities, which include maintaining internal security, combating terrorism and drug smuggling, and securing the country's borders. He appealed to the United States for continued support in equipping the Lebanese Army amidst Lebanon's challenging economic circumstances.
Furthermore, President Aoun reaffirmed his government's commitment to pursuing necessary reforms across multiple sectors and tackling corruption as part of broader efforts to stabilize the nation.
