Beirut: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Friday expressed Lebanon's intent to enhance relations with Syria, emphasizing the principles of mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. This statement came during a reception for a Syrian delegation that included Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani and Justice Minister Mazhar Al-Wais.
According to Kuwait News Agency, President Aoun highlighted the necessity of revitalizing diplomatic relations following Syria's recent decision to suspend the joint higher coordination council. This council, established in 1991 through a cooperation agreement signed by then-Lebanese President Elias Hrawi and the late Syrian president Hafez al-Assad, was intended to serve as a high-level coordination body between the two nations.
President Aoun further elaborated on the improved situation along the shared borders, noting that several issues of mutual concern still need resolution. These include the demarcation of borders and addressing the status of detainees. Lebanon currently holds Syrians on various charges, while Beirut seeks clarity on the fate of numerous Lebanese detained during the reign of the late Syrian president and his son, Bashar. Additionally, security measures have been intensified along the borders to combat drug and arms trafficking and prevent illegal crossings.
