Cairo: Today in Kuwait's history, several significant events have shaped the nation's journey over the years. Starting in 1965, Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Salem took a constitutional oath before the National Assembly, marking his ascension as the Amir of the State of Kuwait. Following this, in 1966, the Amir inaugurated Kuwait University (KU), which initially had two faculties and enrolled 418 students with 31 teaching staff, setting a strong foundation for higher education in the country. According to Kuwait News Agency, in 1981, Hamad Al-Humaida, a former member of the first National Assembly in 1963, passed away at the age of 74. By 1990, the United Nations played a pivotal role by distributing four Kuwaiti documents detailing the atrocities such as killings, torture, and looting by Iraqi forces during their occupation of Kuwait. During the same year, popular delegations from Kuwait, comprising 90 people, embarked on international tours to over 100 capitals to raise awareness about their just causes and the harsh treatment by Iraqi occupation forces. Significant administrative changes took place in 1999 when Kuwait Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a decree establishing Mubarak Al-Kabeer Governorate, encompassing several key areas. In 2004, Kuwait hosted the inaugural consultative meeting of Red Crescent presidents from the Gulf region, and its national team achieved victory at the Gulf Tennis Championship held in Doha, Qatar. Remarkable advancements in the medical field were also noted. In 2005, Kuwaiti surgeon Dr. Mohammad Al-Haifi successfully conducted an endoscopic operation to remove a stomach cancer tumor from a 56-year-old patient. Furthermore, in 2006, Kuwaiti athlete Tareq Al-Qallaf triumphed at the East Asian Epee Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The year 2008 marked the opening of the regional bureau of the UN Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT) by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Sabah in Shuwaikh. In 2013, Kuwait signed an agreement with the GCC Secretariat to establish the GCC Intellectual Property training center's headquarters. Notable losses were recorded in 2016 with the passing of Khalifa Al-Amiri, a revered folkloric singer, at 84. In 2019, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed a KD nine million loan agreement with Uzbekistan for an infrastructure project, and Kuwait chaired the 22nd session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the World Heritage Convention. Recent achievements in 2022 include a team at Adan Hospital successfully using the LLY Robot to fragment a kidney stone and Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) announcing the sale of its first shipment of airplane fuel from the Al-Zour refinery, delivered by the Pacific Sarah tanker in collaboration with the Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC).
