Kuwait city: Acting Director General of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), Dr. Faisal Al-Humaidan, announced the launch of the Integrated Kuwait Advanced Research for Ultra-Scale Computing System (ICARUS), marking a significant advancement in the nation's technological capabilities.
According to Kuwait News Agency, ICARUS is the first fully integrated national platform in Kuwait designed for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative aims to support the scientific and research communities while bolstering Kuwait's position in advanced technologies. In a press statement, Al-Humaidan highlighted that the system offers advanced processing and data capabilities, with a computing performance of 244 teraflops and storage capacities of up to 500 terabytes for temporary storage and five petabytes for permanent storage. These features enable ICARUS to address research challenges across various fields, including environment, energy, water, petroleum, biomedical engineering, and climate change.
Al-Humaidan emphasized that ICARUS is more than just a technical project; it represents an investment in Kuwait's scientific and technological future. It opens new avenues for both local and international collaboration and reinforces the country's role as a regional hub for research and innovation. This aligns with the leadership's directives towards establishing a knowledge-based economy.
Technical lead engineer Tahani Hussein elaborated that ICARUS was designed to balance high computing power with energy efficiency. It features parallel and sequential workload management, combining big data technologies and AI on a single infrastructure. This integration facilitates data analysis, runs simulations, and handles various research workloads.
Hussein outlined the key benefits of the platform, which include accelerating research in sectors like energy, environment, water, and medical technologies. It also supports decision-making through advanced simulations and big data analysis, enhances risk management, trains national talent in HPC and AI, and helps position Kuwait among countries with advanced computing technologies.
