Kuwait city: Today in Kuwait’s history, significant achievements and events mark the country’s journey as a nation. Kuwait Amir Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah founded an orphanage managed by Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, providing shelter for 100 orphans, showcasing early social welfare efforts.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Kuwait’s progress in various sectors is highlighted by the establishment of the Kuwait Credit Bank in 1960 under a decree signed by Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. This institution was pivotal in facilitating credit for properties and the industrial and agricultural sectors. In 1961, another decree led to the formation of the Kuwait Flour Mills Company, which began flour production in 1965 and later merged with the Kuwaiti Bakeries Company in 1988, becoming the Flour Mills and Bakeries Company.
In 1973, Kuwait demonstrated its commitment to regional solidarity when a squadron of Hawker Hunter warplanes from the Kuwait Air Force participated in the 1973 October War in Egypt against Israeli occupation. This was followed by a significant incident in 1986 when the Kuwaiti oil tanker “Al-Faihaa” was struck by a missile from a gunboat 10 nautical miles off Dubai.
The diplomatic front saw Kuwait Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in 1990 starting a tour of UN Security Council member states, beginning in France, to discuss the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait with President Francois Mitterrand. This was part of Kuwait’s efforts to garner international support against the occupation.
In 1997, the Public Authority for Housing Welfare celebrated the signing of a project to build the West Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh housing district, and in 2002, Kuwait reinforced diplomatic ties when Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah honored Moroccan King Mohammad VI with the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Order, reciprocated by Morocco with the Order of Mohammad.
The sporting achievements of Kuwait were highlighted in 2010 when the national shooting team won the gold medal in the Grand Discus Competition in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In 2012, a significant development in the aviation sector occurred when Kuwait Airways was transformed into a shareholding company following a decree signed by Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
Most recently, in 2024, Kuwait submitted its official ratification of a Protocol Amending the Marrakesh Agreement, which established the World Trade Organization, reaffirming its commitment to a sustainable international trade system and the preservation of natural resources.
