Kuwait’s Historical Milestones in Oil, Media, and Infrastructure

Kuwait city: In a significant event of 1938, large quantities of oil were discovered in the Burgan field at a depth of 3,672 feet, signaling the inception of the oil industry in Kuwait. The drilling operation at this site had commenced on January 16, 1937.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Qabas Newspaper issued its first edition in 1972, marking a new chapter in Kuwait's media landscape. The newspaper was established by the Al-Qabas for Press, Printing and Publication, which comprises five board members.

In 1981, Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a decree for the establishment of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). Following this, 1988 saw the opening of the Kuwait Yacht Club, with a harbor spanning 120,000 square meters and accommodating 265 boats. The same year witnessed the inauguration of a 21-kilometer-long Kuwait Sea Front, stretching from Shuwaikh Area to Salmiya Area.

The year 2004 was remarkable for Kuwait's sporting achievements, as the nation clinched the Asian Handball Cup for the second consecutive time, defeating Japan 28-24 in the final held in Doha, Qatar. Further developments in 2016 included the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development's signing of a KD 4.5 million loan agreement with the Kingdom of Lesotho to aid in the development of Moshoeshoe I International Airport.

In 2018, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah led an informal UN Security Council session, convened by Kuwait, to address the Palestinian issue. Fast forward to 2021, the Kuwaiti cabinet extended decisions made on February 3 regarding the workforce and public transport capacity limits to 30 percent as part of the COVID-19 containment measures. Additionally, the cabinet decided to close land and sea borders, excluding cargo, starting February 24, to combat the COVID-19 spread.
