Kuwait’s Historical Milestones in Governance and Culture

Kuwait City: A series of significant historical events mark Kuwait's journey in governance and cultural development. These milestones highlight the nation's commitment to international cooperation, economic reforms, and cultural contributions over the years.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in 1979, Kuwait Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a decree approving membership of a protocol under the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (Intelsat), which was originally signed in Washington on May 19, 1978. This step underscored Kuwait's engagement with international telecommunications advancements.

In 2000, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah further enhanced the nation's international relations by signing a decree concerning agreements of the divided zone with Saudi Arabia. The accord, which appointed Jassem Al-Oun as head of the team overseeing the implementation, aimed to provide housing units for Saudi citizens and develop infrastructure in the Al-Zour area, southern Kuwait.

The following year, 2001, witnessed a significant economic reform when the Kuwait government reduced taxes on foreign companies from 55 to 25 percent. This move was part of broader efforts to attract foreign investment and stimulate economic growth. In the same year, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah honored former MP Hamad Al-Jo'an by granting him privileges equal to those of the chairman of the supreme judicial council, recognizing his public service during his tenure in the parliament.

In the cultural sphere, the passing of notable figures such as Kanaan Hamad in 2003 and Maryam Al-Ghadhban in 2004 marked the end of an era in Kuwait's entertainment and theater movements. Kanaan Hamad, who began his acting career in 1963, and Maryam Al-Ghadhban, a pioneering figure in theater since 1960, left behind a legacy of artistic contributions celebrated both locally and across the Arab world.

The opening of the cultural attraction village Youm Al-Bahhar (Day of the Sailor) in 2007 provided a new venue for cultural engagement at the sea front opposite the National Assembly, further enriching Kuwait's cultural landscape.

In the realm of journalism, 2022 saw Dehairan Abal-Khail, Treasurer of Kuwait Journalists Association, elected as a member of the executive committee of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) during its 31st congress in Oman. This achievement highlighted Kuwait's active participation in international journalism forums.

Looking ahead, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed a KD 7.5 million (USD 24.4 million) loan agreement in 2024 with Pakistan to finance the Mohmand Dam hydropower project, demonstrating Kuwait's continued support for development initiatives in the region.
