Kuwait’s Historical Milestones Highlighted in Recent Review

Kuwait city: A recent review of key events in Kuwait's history has brought attention to significant milestones that have shaped the nation's development and cultural heritage. These events span across decades, showcasing Kuwait's journey from joining international organizations to advancing in technology and cultural discoveries.

According to Kuwait News Agency, one of the earliest notable events was the opening of the Al-Sharqiya Cinema Theater near Al-Amiri Hospital, which was the country's first open-air summer cinema capable of accommodating 1,800 spectators. This marked a cultural development in the region. In 1960, Kuwait became a member of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), further cementing its commitment to global cultural and educational initiatives.

In 1961, a significant change was made when Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah signed an amendment to the law concerning the state's new flag. Two years later, in 1963, the same Amir established the Supreme Defense Council, tasked with the nation's defense and safety, highlighting the country's focus on national security.

Kuwait's advancement in technology was marked in 2003 with the commencement of online trading at the Kuwait Stock Market. This was followed by a major environmental project in 2004, when the Ministry of Public Works inaugurated a KD 34 million project to deliver recycled water to farms in the Abdaly Area, showcasing a move towards sustainability.

In the media sector, 2006 saw the publication of the first issue of Al-Rai newspaper, replacing the Al-Rai Al-Aam newspaper, with Jassem Boodai as its Editor-in-Chief. Awan newspaper also made its debut in 2007, focusing on political, economic, and social affairs.

The year 2013 was marked by the opening of the Afro-Asian Women's Sport Forum in Kuwait, co-organized by the Olympic Council of Asia, the International Olympic Committee, and the African Union of national Olympic committees, with participation from around 100 countries.

Environmental research took a leap in 2015 when the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research launched a floating device to monitor and analyze changes in the marine environment. In 2016, a significant archaeological discovery was made by the National Council for Culture, Art and Letters, unearthing a piece of pottery over 7,300 years old in the Subbiya Area, evidence of early human presence in the region.

In 2018, Kuwait and China signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a cooperation mechanism for the Silk City and Kuwait's five islands, aiming to revitalize Kuwait's commercial and economic standing in the region.

A notable political event occurred in 2019 when Kuwait Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah relieved First Deputy Premier and Defense Minister Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khaled Jarrah Al-Sabah from their duties. The Amir appointed the Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister as acting Defense Minister, and Deputy Premier and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Anas Al-Saleh as Interior Minister. Additionally, an Amiri order appointed Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah as Prime Minister, although he later declined the nomination.
