Kuwait’s Historical Milestones Highlighted: From Seif Palace to International Honors

Kuwait City: Today in Kuwait's history, several significant events are celebrated, reflecting the nation's progress and contributions on both a local and international scale.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the historical timeline begins in 1913 when lights were turned on at Seif Palace for the first time, marking a significant technological advancement during the reign of Kuwait's 7th ruler, Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah. In 1976, several key developments took place, including the distribution of 1,721 housing lots in the Mishref Area by the Public Authority for Housing Welfare, the ratification of an agreement to establish the United Arab Shipping Company by Kuwait Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, and the establishment of a fund for the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

In 1980, Iranian Foreign Minister Sadeq Qotbzadeh survived an assassination attempt during an official visit to Kuwait, highlighting a tense period in regional relations. The year 2001 saw Hamad Al-Afasi earn a bronze medal in the world shooting championship in Cyprus, showcasing Kuwait's growing presence in international sports.

The following year, in 2002, the UN refugee agency honored Kuwait Red Crescent Society Chairman Barjas Al-Barjas for his contributions to international assistance, making him the first Arab to receive this recognition. Additionally, Kuwait secured one silver and three bronze medals in the world fencing championship for the disabled in Budapest, Hungary.

In 2010, the National Assembly passed amendments to Law 88/1995 concerning the trial of cabinet ministers, signaling legislative developments in the country. By 2015, the martyr office approved the production of stamps bearing the names and photos of Kuwaiti martyrs, commemorating national heroes.

In 2016, Kuwait joined the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), furthering its commitment to international cooperation. Most recently, in 2020, the Kuwait Oil Tankers Company (KOTC) took delivery of an oil tanker from South Korean Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Company, highlighting ongoing advancements in the nation's shipping and oil industries.
