Kuwait’s Historical Milestones: From Telegraph Services to Olympic Triumphs

Kuwait city: Today marks significant events in Kuwait's history, showcasing the country's progress and achievements over the years. In 1912, a pivotal moment unfolded when Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, Kuwait's 7th ruler, approved a British government request to set up a telegraph service in Kuwait City. This development marked a substantial advancement in communication for the region.

According to Kuwait News Agency, on the cultural front, 1978 saw the opening of a popular caf© in the Sharq Area, providing a new leisure destination for the people of Kuwait. The year 1996 was marked by the passing of Abdurrahman Al-Dhuwaihi, a distinguished poet, actor, and director, at the age of 64. Al-Dhuwaihi's contributions to the arts were well recognized in the country.

In 1999, diplomatic ties between Kuwait and Sudan strengthened when Sudanese Minister of Foreign Relations Dr. Mustafa Othman Ismail hoisted Sudan's flag over a temporary embassy building in Kuwait and laid the foundation for a new diplomatic mission. This event followed strained relations due to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

The early 2000s saw notable achievements and losses. In 2001, Jassem Al-Qatami was honored with the Jamal Abdulnasser Award by the Beirut-based Center for Arab Unity Studies for his dedication to defending human rights in Arab countries. Al-Qatami held significant roles, including Foreign Ministry Undersecretary in 1962 and a three-term parliament member.

In 2003, Justice Salah Fahad Al-Fahad, a key figure in Kuwait's judiciary, passed away at 54. He led the criminal bench at the Supreme Court of Appeal and the State Security Court post-liberation of Kuwait from Iraq in 1991. He also chaired a committee addressing the stocks' selling crisis in 1982.

Khalifa Talal Al-Jerri, who passed away in 2004 at 75, was a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1962 and the 1963 National Assembly. Over 15 years, Al-Jerri contributed significantly to the development of education in the private sector and served as president of Al-Sahel Sporting Club.

In 2010, the educational sector mourned the loss of Abdulbaqi Abdullah Al-Nouri, a revered teacher who died at 81. Al-Nouri began his teaching career in 1955 and became the director of the Industrial College in 1962. He was also a founder of the Kuwait Teachers' Society in 1963.

The year 2021 was marked by the Cabinet's decision to reopen all activities, except gatherings, starting September 1st. Additionally, Kuwaiti shooter Abdullah Al-Rasheedi won a bronze medal in the men's skeet event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

In 2022, Kuwaiti racer Faisal Burbea achieved first place in the stock category at the 2022 Jet Ski Championship in Poland. Recently, in 2023, the National Assembly passed amendments to Law 14/1973 concerning the Constitutional Court, reflecting ongoing legislative developments in the country.
