Kuwait’s Historical Milestones: From Defense Appointments to Virtual News Anchors

Kuwait City: Today marks several significant events in Kuwait's history, reflecting the nation's advancements and strategic decisions across various fields. In 1967, the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued an Amiri Decree appointing Saleh Mohammad Al-Sabah as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Al-Yarmouk Brigade, a move aligned with the Arab armies' efforts for collective defense against external threats.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the establishment of the Kuwait Squash Federation in 1985 marked a pivotal moment for the sport in the nation, with the first squash court having been built by Al-Qadsiya Club in 1967. In 1986, another decree by the Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah led to the formation of the Food Affairs Council, which was tasked with developing a national nutrition policy.

In 1996, the National Assembly approved a bill to ban coeducation at Kuwait University, the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET), and private schools, with an enforcement timeline set for five years. The following year, Kuwait's international standing was elevated when Dr. Sultan Al-Khalaf was elected as head of the regional committee of the Office of Infectious Diseases, making Kuwait the first Arab country to lead this commission.

Further developments included the formation of the 25th cabinet by the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in 2008, and in 2013, Kuwait and Iraq signed memoranda on border demarcation and funding a residential complex in Umm Qasr. That same year, Kuwait provided Yemen with USD 85 million through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to rebuild damaged regions and improve Aden's power network.

In 2014, Dr. Fawaz Al-Enezi was recognized for his contributions to water research, receiving an award from the Arab Ministerial Council. Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah was honored in 2015 with the Senegalese presidential medal for strengthening bilateral relations.

Kuwait continued to gain international recognition when in 2016, Major General Khaled Abdulatif Al-Roqom was elected as dean of military attaches in Belgium, a first for an Arab diplomat in Europe.

The year 2020 saw the Kuwaiti Cabinet implementing measures in response to the coronavirus outbreak, including extending a resolution halting work at public departments, adjusting curfew times, and ordering a lockdown of the Al-Farwaniya district.

In 2023, Kuwait News Agency launched the nation's first virtual news anchor as part of its media development plans. The same year, Kuwait Sports Club triumphed over Kazma with an 8-1 victory, securing the national football (Zain) League title for the 2022-23 season.

Most recently, in 2024, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a KD-5-million loan agreement with Senegal to support a highway project, furthering Kuwait's commitment to international development and cooperation.
