Kuwait’s Historical Milestones: A Look Back at Key Events

Kuwait City: Today marks several significant events in Kuwait's history, each contributing to the nation's rich and diverse legacy. Among the notable occurrences, Kuwait Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued a decree in 1966 to establish an information consultative council, a move that underscored the importance of informed governance and transparency.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in 1974, Kuwait achieved a major sporting victory by winning the third GCC soccer tournament, highlighting the country's growing prowess in regional sports. In 1991, a significant environmental disaster was averted when the fire at the burning oil field, Al-Ahmadi 24, was extinguished. This blaze was one of many set by retreating Iraqi forces during the Gulf War, which posed severe ecological and economic threats.

In 2003, a rocket fired by the Iraqi regime struck Al-Sharq mall, causing damage but fortunately not resulting in casualties. Two years later, in 2005, Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah laid the cornerstone of Jaber Al-Ahmad city in Amghara, signaling a new phase of urban development. That same year, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation expanded its international presence by inaugurating an office in Beijing.

In 2012, Kuwait Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah made a historic visit to Baghdad to attend the 23rd Arab Summit, marking his first visit since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

Further achievements followed, with the Kuwaiti Al-Gurain club being crowned champion of the Arab clubs handball tournament in 2014. In 2015, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the World Bank, initiated an educational cooperation deal aimed at overhauling teaching curricula, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing educational standards.

The passing of prominent Kuwaiti figures, such as actor Makki Al-Gallaf in 2016 and former Minister of Endowment and Islamic Affairs in 2020, marked the end of significant eras in Kuwait's cultural and religious spheres. The literary scene saw triumph in 2017 when Kuwaiti writer Latifa Beti won the Sheikh Zayed Book Award.

In 2018, Kuwait Petroleum International took a step towards sustainable energy by signing an agreement with German company Ionity to expand its fleet of electric vehicles. More recently, in 2020, the death of renowned Kuwaiti actor Sulieman Al-Yaseen at the age of 71 was mourned by many. Finally, in 2022, political dynamics took center stage as the Kuwaiti National Assembly discussed an interpellation against then Prime Minister His Highness Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, culminating in the government's resignation.
