Kuwait City: The history of Kuwait is marked by significant events that have played a crucial role in shaping its present and future. On this day in 1917, Sheikh Salem Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah ascended to power as the ninth ruler of Kuwait, during which he initiated the construction of the third protective wall and established the first telegraph line. That same year, Kuwait mourned the passing of its eighth ruler, Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, who died at the age of 57.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the year 1961 witnessed the passing of noted educator Hashem Al-Ginaee, who was instrumental in the establishment of Kuwait's first private English school in 1923. In 1973, the Central Statistical Bureau recorded Kuwait's population at 851,000 during a nationwide census. The early 2000s saw further advancements with the establishment of the Kuwaiti telecommunication hospital in 2001, built at a cost of KD five million (USD 16.5 million).
The Kuwait Finance House took a significant step in 2005 by inaugurating a center dedicated to treating drug addiction, costing KD four million (USD 13.2 million). The oil sector complex opened in 2008, representing a substantial investment of KD 50 million (USD 165.4 million). In sports, the Al-Qadsiya soccer team triumphed in the Kuwait Federation Cup in 2008, defeating Kuwait in a penalty shoot-out.
In 2014, humanitarian efforts were highlighted when the International Islamic Charity Organization received a USD 5.067 million donation from the Amir of Kuwait for building a village for Syrian refugees in Jordan's Al-Zaatari camp. The Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Center was inaugurated in 2018, spanning an impressive 127,000 square meters.
The year 2019 saw legislative progress with the amendment of the housing care law, granting widows of Kuwaiti martyrs rights to ownership certificates of allotted housing. That year also marked a collaborative venture in the petrochemical sector, with the Petrochemical Industries Company partnering with a Canadian firm to establish a polypropylene plant in Alberta.
The Sheikh Jaber Al-Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Tennis Complex, occupying a 70 square meter area, was inaugurated in 2020. Looking ahead, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research is set to achieve a new milestone in 2024 with a patent in Nano-fluid technology awarded by the US Patent and Trademark Office.
