Kuwait’s Historical Events: Plague, Decrees, and Notable Deaths

Kuwait City: A devastating plague once swept through Kuwait, claiming numerous lives, predominantly affecting women and children. The crisis forced many to bury their deceased loved ones within their homes, while others sought refuge in the Shuwaikh area, constructing temporary shelters. This tragic event coincided with the annual pearl-diving season, resulting in an estimated 60 percent of the population perishing during this time.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in 1969, Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah enacted a decree outlining the responsibilities of the Ministry of Defense. This decree focused on military preparation, national defense, arming the forces, and executing military strategies. Nearly a decade later, in 1978, a grim event unfolded with the assassination of Ali Yassin, the head of the Palestinian Liberation Organization office in Kuwait. The Abu Nedhal Group was accused of orchestrating his murder.

In 1980, another significant development occurred when Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a decree establishing the Arabian Gulf University. This was followed by a 1983 decree establishing the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources, marking an important step towards enhancing Kuwait's agricultural and fishery sectors.

The year 1991 marked the passing of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah at the age of 77. A key figure in modernizing Kuwait, he held numerous senior positions, including assistant director of general security, director of general security, and head of police. He was instrumental in founding the armed forces and was named army commander in 1954. Sheikh Abdullah was also a pioneer in establishing Kuwait Radio and played a crucial role in combating smuggling. He resigned from all positions in 1961, leaving a lasting legacy in Kuwaiti politics and development.

In 2015, Hadi Hayef Al-Huwaila, a long-serving member of parliament, passed away at 76, leaving behind a legacy of legislative contributions. The following year, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research achieved a milestone by securing a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office for an invention designed to deter waves and protect coastal areas.
