Kuwaiti surgical team successfully performs rare kidney transplant

A Kuwaiti surgical team, under the supervision of Dr. Talal Al-Qaoud, Dr. Saja Surour and Dr. Mohammad Zain, was able to perform a rare kidney transplantation operation with the reconstruction of the urinary tract of a 29-year-old man.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a press statement Thursday that this achievement is a continuation of the success of kidney transplant operations at the Hamed Al-Essa Organ Transplant Center of the ministry.

The patient had been suffering from chronic renal failure since childhood due to a congenital defect in the urinary bladder, which forced him to do dialysis for 20 years, which led to the formation of vein clotting and atrophy, which made the traditional kidney transplantation methods in the pelvic area impossible, MoH explained.

A globally rare type of kidney transplant was resorted to, consisting of transplantation and restoration simultaneously, it added.

The patient recovered after the operation and is living life normally, benefiting from the organ donation program without needing chronic dialysis, which shows a new success for the national competencies that MoH abounds with, it stated.
