Kuwait City: Kuwait's Ambassador to the US, Sheikha Al-Zain Al-Sabah, announced that construction has begun on an Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm memorial at a prominent Washington, DC site, set to open in fall 2026. The announcement was made during Kuwait's participation in US Memorial Day events.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the monument is a gift from Kuwait to the American people, honoring the shared sacrifices of US and Kuwaiti forces during the 1991 liberation of Kuwait. Al-Sabah emphasized that the memorial will stand as a lasting symbol of the two nations' partnership and Kuwait's gratitude for America's support.
Al-Sabah highlighted that the annual embassy involvement in Memorial Day reflects the friendship and shared values that define Kuwaiti-US ties. Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honors US service members who died in the nation's wars. The first ceremony was held on 30 May 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery.
