Kuwait city: Kuwait, representing the Arab countries group at the United Nations, has called for an end to the selective enforcement of international law. The country emphasized that leadership for peace can only be successful if it adheres to UN charters and objectives, respects state sovereignty, aims to peacefully resolve disputes, and consistently applies international law. According to Kuwait News Agency, Acting Charge d'Affaires of Kuwait's Permanent Mission to the UN, Minister Plenipotentiary Faisal Al-Enzi, made these remarks on Tuesday. He delivered a speech on behalf of the Arab group during a UN Security Council session focusing on leadership for peace. The session was convened in response to a surge in global armed disputes, overlapping crises, and a decline in adherence to international law, which Al-Enzi described as a direct threat to global peace and security. Al-Enzi stressed there is no alternative to the UN, highlighting it as the only legal and collective framework for international acti on due to its tools and experience. He underscored the central role of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the importance of empowering him to fulfill his mandate in line with the UN charter. This empowerment would allow Guterres to alert the Council to threats to international peace with independence and responsibility. In his address, Al-Enzi also noted that the success of the General Assembly requires a productive partnership with the Security Council, based on mutual trust, institutional respect, and collective action. This cooperation should enhance preventive diplomacy and address the root causes of conflicts. Concluding his speech, Al-Enzi emphasized the importance of broader participation among UN member states to support the UN chief's efforts. He advocated for bolstering transparency and accountability, implementing agreed-upon reforms, and ensuring the financial sustainability of the organization.
