Kuwait UN Rep. Highlights Women’s Key Role in Peacebuilding at UN Session

Kuwait city: Kuwait affirmed on Tuesday that women are not only victims of conflicts but also key partners and players in making peace and building societies. This statement was delivered by Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Tariq Al-Bannai, during a UN Security Council session focused on women, international peace, and security.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Bannai emphasized that empowering women involves more than just protection from violence and conflicts; it requires granting full political, economic, and social rights, as well as access to education and healthcare. He referenced a report by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, which highlighted significant challenges facing the agenda of women, peace, and security, 25 years after the adoption of the UNSC Resolution No. 1325 in 2000.

Al-Bannai stressed the need for ensuring the full and effective representation of women in political mediation and negotiation processes, advocating for at least one-third representation. He noted this would reflect women's indispensable role in building a more stable and fair future. He also expressed concern over the decline in funding levels allocated to the agenda, particularly the direct funding of local female organizations that serve as the first line of defense in conflict-affected societies.

Since gaining independence, Kuwait has recognized women as true partners in national development, supported by the country's Constitution, which guarantees women's rights. The country has implemented ambitious policies and legislation to enhance women's participation in public life. Kuwait has also established the National Committee to Implement UNSC Resolution No. 1325, titled "Women, Peace and Security," chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, achieving significant successes through this committee.

Al-Bannai expressed gratitude towards Kuwaiti and Palestinian women for their sacrifices for their societies, noting that Palestinian women continue to fight for freedom despite the injustices faced due to the Israeli occupation.
