Dead sea: Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Sabah announced Kuwait's support for the global initiative to renew political commitment to international humanitarian law. She emphasized Kuwait's role as an active partner in promoting justice, peace, and human security during her speech at the High-Level Regional Conference on the Global Initiative, held in Jordan at the Dead Sea. The conference witnessed participation from various specialists in the field.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Ambassador Al-Sabah, who is also part of Kuwait's National Permanent Committee on International Humanitarian Law, stated that Kuwait's accession to the global initiative marks a strategic move to reinforce international humanitarian law. She highlighted the initiative as a unified platform to coordinate global efforts and bridge the gap between theoretical principles and their practical application.
Al-Sabah stressed the humanitarian necessity of committing to the initiative's objectives, which aim to stabilize communities affected by conflicts. She elaborated on how the initiative aids in safeguarding human dignity by protecting medical and relief facilities, securing humanitarian corridors, and strengthening accountability to prevent impunity. She described Kuwait's current commitment as an investment in future stability, which restores confidence in the international community's protective capabilities.
The ambassador outlined Kuwait's participation based on three pillars: enhancing mechanisms to protect civilians and humanitarian and medical workers in conflict zones, reinforcing accountability, and preventing impunity through clear mechanisms for holding violators accountable. She also highlighted Kuwait's significant role in addressing the issue of missing persons in armed conflicts, citing collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2474 (2019).
Al-Sabah mentioned the issuance of three decree-laws in 2025, aligning with international humanitarian law objectives. These laws cover the regulation of Red Crescent and Red Cross emblem usage, protection of missing persons, and addressing international crimes. Additionally, Kuwait is considering adopting a law on the protection of cultural property.
Ambassador Al-Sabah acknowledged the commendation from the Secretary-General of the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who praised Kuwait's historic humanitarian contributions and unwavering support for alleviating suffering in conflict-affected regions and crisis-stricken countries.
