KUWAIT CITY: The Permanent Mission of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations has officially submitted its application to join the 2016 Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This submission was made to the Office of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, marking a significant step in Kuwait's environmental policy. According to Kuwait News Agency, this application is part of a formal process under the 1985 Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, which designates the UN Secretary-General as the convention's depository. The move indicates Kuwait's commitment to reducing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), substances known for their potential to harm the ozone layer. The Kigali Amendment aims to significantly limit the use of HFCs, with the potential to prevent emissions equating to 105 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide and mitigate global temperature rise by up to 0.5 degrees Celsius by the year 2100.
