Kuwait City: Kuwait has been recognized as a "World Crafts City" for Sadu weaving by the World Crafts Council (WCC), acknowledging its efforts to preserve this traditional craft.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the announcement was made by Al-Sadu Society, with its chairman, Sheikha Bibi Duaij Al-Sabah, highlighting that the nomination followed an official visit by a WCC delegation to evaluate Kuwait's commitment to preserving Sadu weaving.
The delegation, led by the council's President Saad Al-Qaddoumi, toured Sadu House and other cultural centers across the country to observe the work and efforts of Sadu weavers. They also engaged with representatives from governmental bodies and cultural institutes to explore ways to further develop the craft on a global scale.
Sheikha Bibi emphasized that Sadu is an integral part of Kuwait's heritage, with its geometric shapes and vibrant colors reflecting the country's history and culture. Historically, Sadu has played a significant role in the lives of Bedouins, being utilized in tents, furniture, and accessories over the years.
The World Crafts Council, a non-profit organization, was established in New York in 1964 and is currently headquartered in Kuwait for the present presidency term.
