Kuwait city: Kuwait remains firmly committed to ensuring the right to water and recognizes its vital importance within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah, Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs.
According to Kuwait News Agency, in a statement on the sidelines of the 25th regular session of the OIC's Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC), held in Jeddah, Sheikha Jawaher highlighted Kuwait's developmental vision New Kuwait 2035, which prioritizes both advanced infrastructure and a sustainable living environment - key pillars that support access to clean and safe water.
"There is no life without water," she stated, referencing the Quranic verse: "And We made from water every living thing." She emphasized that the right to water is a fundamental human right, upheld by Islamic teachings and international human rights law.
She stressed that international humanitarian law mandates fair access to water for all and prohibits its use as a weapon in conflicts.
Sheikha Jawaher also noted the pivotal role of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), which has financed over 125 water and sanitation projects - accounting for 15 percent of its total funded initiatives - to help improve living conditions and reduce the spread of waterborne diseases.
She also highlighted Kuwait's international efforts to tackle water challenges, including its recent accession to the World Water Organization during a meeting in Riyadh this past May.
The 25th regular session of the IPHRC of the OIC kicked off on Sunday, in Jeddah, under the title "Right to Water: Human Rights Perspective."
