Kuwait city: Kuwait on Tuesday renewed its firm commitment to the principles of international humanitarian law and to international and regional efforts aimed at strengthening human rights protection during armed conflicts. This announcement was made during the 13th meeting of Arab national committees at the Arab League by Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs Sheikhah Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Sabah, who delivered the statement on behalf of the Minister of Justice and Chair of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Sheikhah Jawaher emphasized Kuwait's unwavering faith in international cooperation, particularly in the realm of human rights. She noted that Kuwait's accession to the four 1949 Geneva Conventions in 1967 demonstrates its early commitment to international obligations. Sheikhah Jawaher called for stronger cooperation among states and regional bodies through expertise exchange and memoranda of understanding to create a shared foundation for applying humanitarian law amid escalating global crises.
She also highlighted Kuwait's leading role in addressing the issue of missing persons in armed conflicts. This includes collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which contributed to the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2474 (2019) during Kuwait's tenure as a non-permanent member. Furthermore, Sheikhah Jawaher reviewed Kuwait's recent legal developments, such as Decree-Law No. 134/2025 concerning the protection of the Red Crescent and Red Cross emblems, Decree-Law No. 154/2025 on missing persons, and Decree-Law No. 156/2025 addressing international crimes.
In addition, she mentioned ongoing efforts to study legislation designed to protect cultural property in accordance with humanitarian law standards. Concluding her statement, Sheikhah Jawaher urged states to fulfill their obligations under the Geneva Conventions and relevant UN resolutions, underscoring that humanitarian law provides a crucial framework for accountability, reduces suffering, and promotes peace.
