Kuwait National Assembly Approves Law to Ease Foreign Business Entry

KUWAIT CITY: The Kuwait National Assembly has approved significant amendments to Law (68) of 1980, effectively eliminating the requirement for foreign companies to have a local agent in order to operate within the country. This legislative change aims to streamline business operations and attract more foreign investment to Kuwait. According to Kuwait News Agency, this decision marks a pivotal shift in Kuwait's regulatory framework, reflecting the country's ongoing efforts to create a more conducive environment for international businesses. The move is anticipated to boost economic activity by making it easier for foreign enterprises to enter the Kuwaiti market, aligning with broader goals of economic diversification and development. The legislative amendment is part of a historical continuum of Kuwait's evolving economic policies. Back in 1970, Kuwait took a notable step by transforming the Planning Council into an independent body tasked with preparing and supervising the implementation of economic, social , and housing policies. Over the years, Kuwait has continued to refine its economic strategies, as seen with the establishment of the Kuwait Banking Committee in 1981 to enhance cooperation among local banks and support the national economy. In recent years, Kuwait has also shown a commitment to international cooperation and development, as demonstrated by its accession to the UN Convention on Transnational Organized Crime in 2000, and the signing of a cooperation deal with NATO in 2006. The country has also been active in supporting scientific advancement and infrastructure development, with initiatives such as the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. The recent legislative change is expected to further Kuwait's economic ambitions by eliminating barriers for foreign investment, thus fostering a more dynamic and competitive market landscape. This development comes as Kuwait continues to position itself as a key player in regional and global mar kets.
