Kuwait City: Kuwaiti Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts among GCC countries during the Gulf Cancer Awareness Week, highlighting both governmental and non-governmental contributions to health and preventive development. Dr. Al-Awadhi’s remarks were delivered by Dr. Nadia Al-Juma, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Care Affairs at the Ministry, at the opening ceremony of the 10th Gulf Cancer Awareness Week. He pointed out that the continuation of this initiative is indicative of progress and advancement in the region.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Dr. Al-Awadhi noted that the Gulf Union for Cancer Control, established in 2002, includes Gulf civil societies engaged in cancer control and has implemented successful joint programs and initiatives. These efforts have resonated positively on both regional and international levels, thanks to effective collaboration with the Gulf Health Council. He underlined the strategy in alignment with the World Health O
rganization to focus on two main goals: raising awareness about risk factors among Gulf citizens and emphasizing the importance of early detection.
Dr. Al-Awadhi also mentioned the establishment of a coordinating committee in Kuwait, consisting of relevant bodies and associations, tasked with implementing awareness activities during the week. Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cancer Awareness National Campaign (CAN), remarked that the Gulf Week has achieved its noble goals since inception, notably in changing perceptions of cancer diseases.
Sheikha Azza Jaber Al-Ali Al-Sabah, Founder and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Al Sidra Association for Psychological Care for Cancer Patients, highlighted that the event aligns with the union’s goals to combat and prevent cancer at a GCC level. She emphasized that Sidra is the first non-profit public benefit association at the GCC level to offer psychological and moral support to cancer patients and their caregivers, enhancing thei
r health and treatment response.
Dr. Hessa Al-Shaheen, Head of the coordinating committee for the Gulf Week, remarked that the event carries numerous messages of positive influence and psychological support. This year’s Gulf Week features more than 72 activities targeting various segments of society.
