Kuwait city: Kuwait Foreign Minister and chair of the current session of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial Council, Abdullah Al-Yahya, emphasized that the latest meeting underscores the enduring historical ties among member states, which enhance their capacity to tackle both present and future challenges.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Yahya, in his inaugural address at the 165th session of the GCC Ministerial Council held in Kuwait, asserted the Council’s dedication to realizing the aspirations of Gulf citizens and crafting a future aligned with their ambitions while preserving their collective achievements. He highlighted the meeting’s timing with the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly as an opportunity to strengthen coordination and ensure the Gulf’s effective participation in the face of accelerating global challenges.
Al-Yahya expressed optimism that the forthcoming UN General Assembly session would facilitate constructive dialogue, uphold humanitarian values, and promote sustainable solutions to enhance global peace and security. He reiterated the GCC’s active role in the international system to secure a more secure and prosperous future for its people.
Addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Al-Yahya noted the ongoing crisis as Israeli forces continue to violate humanitarian principles and international norms. He urged the international community to uphold its responsibilities, ensure civilian protection, and support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. He commended Saudi Arabia and France for their efforts in hosting the international conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue.
Discussing Iraq, Al-Yahya reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s security and prosperity, reflecting Kuwait’s broader dedication to regional peace. He welcomed GCC backing for Iraq to address unilateral decisions’ negative impacts, particularly regarding maritime agreements and border negotiations, and emphasized the need for respect for Kuwait’s sovereignty.
On the topic of Syria, the Minister expressed full support for Syria’s security and territorial integrity and condemned Israeli incursions as violations of Syria’s sovereignty. Regarding Lebanon, he affirmed GCC support for President Joseph Aoun’s efforts to maintain security and stability.
Al-Yahya also highlighted the importance of the GCC-Japan Strategic Dialogue Ministerial Meeting, noting Japan as a key partner. He acknowledged the postponement of the meeting with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister but expressed hope for a comprehensive political resolution to the Ukrainian crisis.
Furthermore, Al-Yahya outlined Kuwait’s plans to host several upcoming high-level events aimed at enhancing Gulf-European cooperation in various fields. He welcomed GCC foreign ministers to Kuwait, emphasizing the session’s role in advancing Gulf cooperation and integration.
In closing, Al-Yahya expressed gratitude for the support extended to Kuwait during its GCC presidency and praised the collective efforts to strengthen Gulf unity.
