New york: Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Tareq Al-Banai has emphasized the UN's crucial role as the "optimum framework" for tackling joint global challenges. Speaking to KUNA on the occasion of UN Day, observed on October 24, Al-Banai acknowledged the rapid global transformations and challenges, underscoring the importance of adhering to UN principles and multilateral cooperation.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Banai remarked that with the UN system at a pivotal point, it is necessary to exert further efforts to ensure compliance with law, justice, and mutual respect. He affirmed Kuwait's continued support for international efforts aimed at achieving peace, security, sustainable development, and respect for human rights.
Al-Banai stressed the need for reforming the comprehensive international system, including the UN Security Council, to enhance effectiveness and ensure broader justice in member states' representation. This, he noted, would strengthen the credibility of the system's resolutions and response to global crises.
Highlighting over six decades of cooperative relations between Kuwait and the UN, Al-Banai described this partnership as a model for strategic collaboration between a member state and the UN system. He reiterated Kuwait's commitment to the UN Charter's principles and goals, emphasizing international dialogue and cooperation as essential for addressing global challenges and achieving a safer, fairer, and more sustainable future.
Al-Banai affirmed Kuwait's ongoing humanitarian and developmental role, pledging continued support for UN organizations and programs to alleviate humanitarian crises. He identified humanitarian efforts as a core pillar of Kuwait's foreign policy.
He urged building on the outcomes of the Summit of the Future held in New York last year as a step towards enhancing the international action system and promoting accountability. Al-Banai praised UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his efforts in advancing the summit's recommendations and goals.
Concluding his remarks, Al-Banai viewed the UN not only as a system to celebrate but also as a call for promoting international integration, fostering peace, and encouraging joint development. The United Nations Day commemorates the anniversary of the UN Charter's entry into force in 1945, marking the official establishment of the United Nations.
