Kuwait City: Kuwait is joining nations worldwide, celebrating World Radio Day, an international day recognized annually on February 13, highlighting the crucial role of radio in promoting freedom of speech and diversity.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the day underscores radio's significance in fostering international cooperation among broadcasters, urging both major networks and local stations to enhance access to information and support freedom of expression. Established by UNESCO member states in 2011 and adopted as a UN international day in 2012, World Radio Day acknowledges radio's influence in connecting societies and promoting democratic dialogue.
Every year, World Radio Day adopts a specific theme, with 2025 focusing on "Radio and Climate Change," aiming to assist radio stations in their journalistic coverage of environmental issues. For nearly seven decades, Kuwait has prioritized radio broadcasting, with Kuwait Radio being one of the first in the Arab World since its inception in 1951.
The Kuwait Radio Library preserves numerous recordings and interviews featuring artists, musicians, scholars, and intellectuals from across the Arab World, along with a rich collection of classic radio dramas, establishing it as a unique cultural treasure. Building on this legacy, the Ministry of Information launched several media initiatives in November 2022, including a heritage radio station dedicated to classic dramas, programs, and music from Kuwait Radio's extensive archive.
Kuwait Radio has garnered various prestigious awards over the years, including first place in program production hours at the annual Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) in Algeria in February 2019. More recently, in 2023, the ministry secured three awards at the 23rd Arab Radio and Television festival in Tunisia, followed by 12 awards at the Gulf Radio and Television Festival in Manama in 2024.
Founded on February 14, 1951, with its debut broadcast on May 12, Kuwait Radio has consistently evolved to align with global innovations in broadcasting, networks, and technology, while maintaining a diverse range of programming and enhancing national radio capabilities.
