Kuwait city: The Kuwaiti Union of Charitable Societies and Foundations (KCSU) held a special session on Tuesday, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The session saw participation from a representative of the Ministry of Social Affairs, along with several heads of Kuwaiti charitable societies, foundations, and private sector institutions.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the meeting focused on the urgent humanitarian needs of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, as well as refugees and internally displaced people in Sudan. Discussions centered on ways to enhance coordination among Kuwaiti charitable organizations to support international efforts addressing displacement crises.
Dr. Saad Al-Otaibi, President of the KCSU, highlighted that the session occurs at a crucial time, given the challenges facing displaced communities in Sudan and Bangladesh. He emphasized the Union's role as a central coordination platform for over 70 registered charitable and endowment institutions, aiming to unify efforts and direct resources toward impactful interventions.
Al-Otaibi noted that Sudan is experiencing one of the largest current humanitarian emergencies, while Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh continue to endure difficult living conditions that demand ongoing support in shelter, education, and healthcare.
UNHCR representative in Kuwait, Nisreen Rubaian, expressed her appreciation for the significant role of Kuwaiti charitable societies and foundations. She affirmed Kuwait's long-standing reputation as a leader in humanitarian efforts, emphasizing that partnerships with Kuwaiti institutions are crucial for delivering life-saving assistance to over 117 million forcibly displaced people worldwide.
Abdulmohsen Al-Mekhayyal, Acting Director of the Department of Charitable Societies and Foundations at the Ministry of Social Affairs, stated that the ministry supports initiatives by charitable entities to aid those in need both inside and outside Kuwait.
Dr. Nasser Al-Ajmi, Chairman of the Board of Tanmia Charity, remarked that the session reinforces efforts to respond to increasing needs in refugee and displacement areas. He explained that Tanmia Charity, with a five-year history of cooperation with UNHCR, has facilitated Kuwaiti assistance to over 1.1 million refugees in Cox's Bazar camps in Bangladesh, as confirmed by the UNHCR representative. Al-Ajmi added that the organization recently completed a field mission to Chad, which included health, shelter, and food programs supporting Sudanese internally displaced persons.
