Japanese FM Commends Kuwait’s Leadership Role in Closer GCC-Japan Ties

Kuwait city: The State of Kuwait plays an important leadership role in supporting closer GCC-Japanese relations amid ongoing regional and international challenges, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said on Monday. In a statement to KUNA ahead of the second Japan-GCC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Iwaya expressed gratitude to Kuwait for hosting the event, emphasizing the opportunity it provides for a sincere and frank exchange of views with GCC countries.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Iwaya highlighted Kuwait’s energetic leadership and support of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) activities, particularly as its Chair this year. He underscored the intention to advance negotiations towards concluding the Japan-GCC Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and praised the long-standing friendship between Japan and Kuwait.

Iwaya stressed the significance of maritime security for both nations, given their maritime nature, and advocated for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). He reiterated the importance of the rule of law in maintaining freedom and security of navigation, which supports the global supply chain.

Addressing the Middle East situation, Iwaya expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Japan’s efforts to provide relief and support a sustainable ceasefire. He reinforced Japan’s commitment to a two-state solution for the Palestinian issue and emphasized cooperation through the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD).

The Foreign Minister reflected on mutual support during historic challenges, such as the Gulf War and the Great East Japan Earthquake. He noted the gratitude expressed through initiatives like the Sanriku Railway, which received Kuwaiti aid post-disaster.

Iwaya mentioned the historic visit of Kuwait’s Crown Prince to Japan in May, marking the upgrade of bilateral relations to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” He highlighted Kuwait’s popular pavilion at the upcoming Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, as a testament to the cultural exchanges between the two nations.

The minister concluded by acknowledging Kuwait’s role as Japan’s third-largest oil supplier and its importance in the global energy market. Japan’s support for Kuwait’s energy resource stability and transition to clean energy was also affirmed.
