Japan PM Ishiba Pledges Continued Support for Ukraine at G-7 Summit

Kananaskis: Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Japan will continue to support Ukraine to help it achieve a fair and lasting peace, Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported Wednesday. Ishiba held his first face-to-face talks with Zelenskyy in Canada's Kananaskis on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit (G-7).

According to Kuwait News Agency, Ishiba emphasized the urgency for a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine, pledging efforts to advance measures in close cooperation with the G-7 countries. The G-7, comprising Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and the US, plays a crucial role in the ongoing international response to the conflict. Ishiba also reaffirmed Tokyo's commitment, highlighting the current support for Ukraine, which amounts to over USD 12 billion. Additionally, in a bid to aid Ukraine's reconstruction, Ishiba announced that Japan will host an international conference on anti-personnel land mines in October.

The discussions between the two leaders focused on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy informed Ishiba of recent Russian attacks that targeted and destroyed various Ukrainian infrastructures. He expressed gratitude for Japan's steadfast support during these challenging times.
